Fridays Aren’t The Same For Everybody

dinner and a movie

Today is the day of the week that many of us look forward to. We already have our plans for the weekend and we can’t wait. It is a chance to spend quality time with our family and friends. It is a chance to relax and recharge our batteries.

Can the same be said for the students we teach?

bored kids

Today is the day of the week that many of our students do not not look forward to. They have no idea what they are doing this weekend. The weekend happens to them, they do not have the luxury of planning their weekend. During the school week our students know what to expect and they know exactly what is going to happen.

This is not to say that the weekend is difficult for all of our students. But, for many of our students the weekend is not a time they look forward to. They receive fewer hugs, fewer healthy meals, if any, and very little sense of order and calm. The weekend completely drains their batteries, it does not recharge them.

So when you go into school today try to be aware that today can be a difficult day for many of our students. Unlike us, this is a day that they are not looking forward to. They are not going out to dinner and a movie tonight. They are not making fun and exciting plans for the next 2 days. They are counting the minutes until they get to be with you again.

Therefore:

hugs

Give more hugs today. Have more patience today. Laugh more today. And above all else, know that while you may have been looking forward to today, many of your students have not!

Do what you can to make today great for your students! We owe it to them because they will not see us for two and half days and for many of our students the most difficult part of their week is just getting ready to begin.
